If you develop good driving habits, you don’t have to think about the safe steps you’re taking when you perform a driving maneuver, such as making a lane change.
One of these good habits is keeping your eyes moving. Rather than staring straight ahead, move your eyes every 1-2 seconds, to each side, then back to the front and check your rearview mirror. This increases your peripheral (or side) vision, lets you know what’s going on around you, and helps ensure you’re aware of a vehicle that may be driving in your blind spot.
Always check for traffic next to you, oncoming traffic, and for vehicles in your blind spot as you prepare to make a lane change.
