You can be seriously or fatally injured if the machinery you service, maintain, or operate - unexpectedly energizes, starts up, or releases stored energy.
Here are some examples of tasks that could put you at risk.
- Lubricating, cleaning, or unjamming machines.
- Adjusting or inspecting machines or equipment.
- Constructing, installing, or setting up machinery.
- Changing tools.
If your job includes service or maintenance activities during normal production operations, you must follow OSHA’s lockout/tagout procedures when you:
- Remove or bypass machine guards or other safety devices.
- Place any part of your body in or near a machine’s point of operation.
- Place any part of your body in a danger zone associated with machine operations.
